These are the most commonly used water heaters. They consist of an insulated tank where heated water is stored to be used when needed. They do use more energy than some by keeping the water always hot, but there is very little wait time and many hot water applications can be used at once.

Natural gas heaters usually use less energy than electric models, but their initial cost is more.

As the name suggests, these water heaters have no tank to store pre-heated water, but rather heat the water only as you need it. They are much more energy-efficient than a tank heater, but the wait time for heated water is longer and they provide a limited amount of hot water at a time. They are not able to run a washer and a shower at once for instance. Some homes might also need an upgrade to their electrical capacity in order to run them properly.

These tanked water heaters use much less energy than standard electric heaters. They capture heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to the water. They are initially much more expensive but have an excellent return on investment.

They are much larger than a standard heating tank and require much more room to operate. They also do not work very well in areas where it reaches cooler temperatures, so make sure you can fully benefit from a hybrid heater before purchasing.

These water heaters include solar systems and water condensing heaters.

A solar panel attached to the roof absorbs the sun’s heat and warms an antifreeze-like fluid, which then runs to the water tank to heat the water and then back up to the roof to be heated again. These are best used in sunny areas that do not have many overcast days. The initial installation cost is quite expensive, so be sure to consider all aspects of this heater before purchase.

A condensing water heater captures exhaust gases that would normally escape through the flue and runs them around a coil in the base of the water tank, heating the coil, which then heats the water.
